Welcome to Karen's 5K Comeback Race
My world changed July 8, 2020 when I suffered an ischemic stroke during a round of golf that was a result of a dissection of my vertebral artery. I had your typical symptoms at once (which I have learned is not always the case) although neither my husband nor I had any idea what was going on at the time. I was lucky because although we didn’t know what was happening to me, we knew it was bad and we got to the hospital in time. After surgery, I was in ICU for a week and then at a rehab hospital for 3 weeks. At the time I thought the fact that I survived that day meant it was “over” and soon I’d be back to normal. Yeah, I had no idea….my recovery was just beginning. Surviving that day was the easy part; now came the real, excruciatingly hard work that I'd put in over the last 2.5 years to rehab my mind and body. I won’t bore you with the daily tears, despair and pain but I will tell you this, my COMEBACK, will be more fierce than the setback. Being right side affected, I thought my running days were over but with the help and encouragement of my team of doctors, therapists, trainer, and family and friends I'm determined to finish this race. It won't be as fast as my previous races, but come hell or high water, I will do it.
Race day is April 22, 2023 at the Rock N' Roll 5k in Nashville, TN

The mission of Tedy's Team is to raise awareness for stroke and heart disease while supporting survivors on their journey, giving them a means for a comeback!
Tedy's Team was originally founded in 2005, when Tedy Bruschi, former linebacker for the New England Patriots suffered a stroke shortly after winning his 3rd Super Bowl and just days after returning from his first Pro Bowl.
We are honored to be part of the Official Charity Program of the TCS NYC Marathon.
New York Road Runners has allowed us to utilize their platform to elevate the awareness of the warning signs of stroke, which are best remembered by using the acronym BE FAST, which stands for:
- Balance Difficulties
- Eyesight Changes
- Face Drooping
- Arm Weakness
- Speech Difficulties - and if you notice any of those warning signs, it's...
- TIME TO CALL 9-1-1.
- Chest pain and discomfort
- Lightheadedness, nausea or vomiting
- Jaw, neck of back pain
- Discomfort or pain in the arm or shoulder
- Shortness of breath
