Larissa's 2022 NYC Marathon Journey!

I am SO EXCITED to be back with Tedy's Team for the 2022 NYC Marathon! I have been a part of Tedy's Team since the 2012-2013 season. I've run 9 Boston Marathons with Tedy's Team and 1 Marine Corps Marathon and this will be my first NYC Marathon! It has been an absolute honor running with this team, no, this family, for so many years. I could not imagine my life without this team and it has become one of the greatest parts of my life.
I found Tedy's Team after my dad passed away in 2011. My dad had 3 strokes and many TIAs in between. Unfortunately, he’s no longer with us and if you were lucky enough to know him, then you know what the world is losing out on without having him here. When he had his first stroke in 2006, my mom was sitting with him and she recognized it right away. Because of her quick reaction time, he had no deficits. His 2nd stroke in 2007 was much more severe and we almost lost him. When I walked into his bedroom, his face was drooped and he was slurring his speech and I immediately called 911. He was left paralyzed, bed bound and completely blind for the rest of his life after that stroke. You would think a person would give up after that, but for the next 4 ½ years he fought like hell. My mom is the most dedicated person on this planet and she made sure he was receiving the best care at all times. If he wasn’t..watch out. We’ve been known to fire a few medical teams. In December of 2011, my dad’s luck ran out. He suffered his 3rd stroke during his dialysis treatment. He was declared brain dead a few days later and it’s still hard to get past the fact that we had no closure. No goodbye, no I love you, no I’m proud of you for working so hard to stay with us those last few years.
I've made it my life's mission to help as many people and families as possible by educating them on the warning signs of stroke. Being a part of this organization has helped heal me, while allowing me to give back to others. I am forever grateful. Without all of my family, friends, colleagues and donors, I would not be able to do this year after year. Thank you all.
*The mission of Tedy's Team is to raise awareness for stroke and heart disease while supporting survivors on their journey, giving them a means for a comeback!
*Tedy's Team was originally founded in 2005, when Tedy Bruschi, former linebacker for the New England Patriots suffered a stroke shortly after winning his 3rd Super Bowl and just days after returning from his first Pro Bowl.
*We are honored to be part of the Offical Charity Program of the Boston Marathon. The Boston Athletic Association has allowed us to utilize their platform to elevate the awareness of the warning signs of stroke, which are best remembered by using the acronym BE FAST, which stands for:
- Balance Difficulties
- Eyesight Changes
- Face Drooping
- Arm Weakness
- Speech Difficulties - and if you notice any of those warning signs, it's...
- TIME TO CALL 9-1-1.
- Chest pain and discomfort
- Lightheadedness, nausea or vomiting
- Jaw, neck of back pain
- Discomfort or pain in the arm or shoulder
- Shortness of breath
